Learn how to configure your Snakestaff ETQ Gen 2 tourniquet for quick, one-handed access in a tactical admin pouch or medical kit. Step-by-step setup instructions included.

Quick answer

Set up your Snakestaff ETQ Gen 2 by pre-configuring the windlass rod, securing the band, and practicing one-handed deployment from your admin pouch or med kit.

Why setup order matters

The ETQ Gen 2 includes the Tri-Grip Windlass and Power Ring upgrades that change how the band seats. If you skip the initial band adjustment, the windlass can bind under the retention strap during a one-handed draw. Take 30 seconds to check band tension before you load it into a pouch.

Setup steps

  1. Inspect the band and windlass orientation: Unfold the ETQ Gen 2 completely. Confirm the Tri-Grip Windlass is pointing away from the buckle (toward the injured limb). Common mistake: inserting the windlass backward, which prevents the Power Ring from engaging the band. Windlass teeth must face the band's free end.
  2. Pre-set the band tension: Pull the band through the buckle until you have about 2 inches of slack on the non-windlass side. This lets the Power Curve seat properly when you twist. Checkpoint: the band should not be tight enough to lift the windlass off the body when you hold the tourniquet flat. Too much slack = slow wind; too little = band binds.
  3. Secure the windlass in the retention strap: Rotate the windlass one full turn (360°), then tuck it under the clear retention strap. Ensure the strap lies flat over the windlass body, not over the band. Common mistake: trapping the band under the strap, which prevents the windlass from releasing during use. The strap should hold only the windlass, not the band.
  4. Practice the one-handed draw from your pouch: Load the ETQ Gen 2 into your admin pouch or med insert with the buckle facing your draw hand. Perform three dry draws: grip the buckle, pull straight out, and confirm the windlass stays seated under the strap. If the windlass pops out, increase strap tension slightly. If the windlass shifts during the draw, the retention strap needs more tension.

Product facts

  • Snakestaff ETQ Gen 2: The Gen 2 ETQ from Snakestaff retains a compact form while introducing three patent-pending upgrades — Power Curve, Tri-Grip Windlass, and Power Ring — for safer, easier application. The Tri-Grip Windlass and Power Ring let you apply higher torque without slipping, but the windlass must be oriented correctly during setup so it doesn't interfere with the band's travel.
