Learn how to apply an emergency trauma dressing for bleeding control. Step-by-step guide with common mistakes to avoid for effective wound care.
Quick answer
Apply an emergency trauma dressing by placing the pad directly over the wound, wrapping the elastic bandage firmly around the limb, and securing the closure bar to maintain pressure and control bleeding.
When to use a trauma dressing vs. a tourniquet
A trauma dressing is ideal for wounds on the torso, neck, or groin where a tourniquet cannot be applied. It also works well for deep lacerations on limbs when bleeding is not arterial. If bright red blood is spurting, apply a tourniquet first, then dress the wound.
Step-by-step application
- Expose and assess the wound: Cut or tear away clothing to see the full extent of the injury. Do not remove embedded objects; apply the dressing around them. If an object is stuck in the wound, do not pull it out.
- Place the sterile pad directly on the wound: Center the pad over the bleeding point. Hold it in place with your non-dominant hand while you wrap. Make sure the pad covers the entire wound, not just the center.
- Wrap the elastic bandage firmly around the limb: Start wrapping from the distal end (farthest from the heart) and work proximally. Overlap each wrap by half the bandage width. Apply enough tension to compress the wound but not so tight that it causes numbness or discoloration. If the limb turns blue or the patient loses feeling, loosen the wrap and reapply.
- Secure the closure bar or hook: Feed the end of the bandage through the closure bar, then fold back and press the hook into the wrap. Ensure the bar lies flat against the bandage, not on the skin. Check that the closure is not digging into the patient's skin.
- Check distal pulse and re-evaluate: After application, feel for a pulse below the dressing. If the pulse is absent and bleeding has stopped, the dressing is too tight. Loosen slightly and re-secure. Monitor for signs of continued bleeding or swelling. Reassess every 5–10 minutes until medical help arrives.
