Learn how to apply a North American Rescue Elastic Wrap Bandage to secure field dressings with the right tension and technique for tactical or outdoor settings.

Quick answer

Apply the elastic wrap bandage over a sterile dressing with even tension, overlapping each layer by half, and secure the end with the built-in clips or medical tape. This keeps the field dressing stable, clean, and under consistent compression.

Why tension matters in a field dressing

Too loose and the dressing shifts, letting debris in and reducing pressure on the wound. Too tight and you risk cutting circulation, which can cause more harm than the original injury. The elastic wrap's stretch lets you dial in a moderate, even pressure that stays put during movement.

Step-by-step: Securing a field dressing with an elastic wrap

  1. Position the primary dressing: Place a sterile absorbent pad directly over the wound, then hold it in place with one hand. Keep the dressing centered—shifting it now will ruin the seal. A common mistake is letting go of the dressing before the first wrap layer is down, causing it to slide off the wound.
  2. Anchor the wrap below the wound: Hold the loose end of the elastic wrap about 2 inches below the dressing. Wrap it once around the limb so the end is pinned under the second pass. Keep this first turn snug but not tight. If the anchor is too close to the wound, the wrap may push the dressing out of place on the first turn.
  3. Overlap each layer by half: Continue wrapping upward, overlapping each previous layer by about 50%. This creates even pressure and prevents gaps. For a 4-inch wrap on an adult forearm, 4–5 passes are usually enough to cover the dressing. Overlapping less than half lets the dressing peek through and increases the chance of the wrap bunching up.
  4. Apply even tension throughout: Pull the wrap at a consistent stretch—about 20–30% of its max—so it compresses the dressing without making the skin below turn pale or blue. Check the fingertip or toe capillary refill after two passes. A common error is pulling tighter on later passes, which creates a tourniquet effect and restricts blood flow.
  5. Secure the end firmly: Finish the wrap 1–2 inches above the dressing. Use the built-in metal clips if the wrap has them, or secure with medical tape. Tuck the loose end under the last layer if clips are not available, but avoid knots that press into the wound. Relying only on tucking the end without tape or clips can let the wrap unwind during movement.
